Despite the presence of armed groups in Lashio, residents are left to defend for themselves in terms of neighborhood security

In Lashio, northern Shan State, there are armed forces such as the military junta, police and traffic police under the military junta, but the locals are left to defend for themselves in terms of neighborhood security.

Lashio, which was captured by the MNDAA and allied forces during the 1027 Second Operation, was recaptured by the military junta in April 2025 due to Chinese intervention and the military and police were sent in, but for more than four months after the military junta returned, the residents are still left to defend for themselves.

In Lashio, the military junta is mainly responsible for security outside the city, and there are police forces under the military junta in the city, but they are mainly deployed without wearing uniforms around their camps and government offices rather than in the city.

“The police are only in their assigned areas. Their duties are what need go to government offices without wearing uniforms . Sometimes,I saw them in uniforms at Police Station No. 1.They are not strong enough for the people. They are only there for them.If the people catch thieves, they will arrest themselves in the neighborhood,”

a local told BBM. Many residential and public buildings were destroyed during the battle in Lashio, and most of the damaged buildings and roads have not been repaired yet.

In addition, telephone lines, internet lines, water, and electricity didn’t get still normal and are still out of order, and electricity is only available for about (5) hours every (4) day.

Due to the lack of electricity in the city, the residents are mainly using solar lights, and there is no electricity or mains power, so it is not yet possible to restore electricity.

“Lashio still needs a lot of work to be done. The municipality is doing its job, but the electricity is still not working, the phone lines are still not working. Sometimes the internet lines are unstable, and the electricity is all over the civil service offices around the court. Then the hospital in front of Police Station No. 1 get electricity, and once in 4 days from 7 am to 12 pm,”

the local told BBM. Although these city construction and rehabilitation works have not been carried out, the people are also facing difficulties because the traffic police under the military junta are demanding daily gate fees in the city.

In addition, the local resident added that trucks coming from the mainland are being checked at at least (5) places inside the city.

“The military junta doesn’t check the city. Only the police (vehicle guards) are afraid. If they enter the places where they sit and wait, they will be arrested. If you enter those places, which are about 5 places, you will be charged a tea fee. They are waiting in those places, such as at the entrance to Lashio city, near the Lashio city roundabout, near the traffic light at Namtu intersection, near the football field in Ward 12, and in front of Lashio General Hospital. If they catch, they will ask for hundreds of thousands of baht. They are for trucks and trailers”

Similarly, the military junta reoccupied the areas outside Lashio city, including Naung Cho, Moe Bye, and Thabeikkyin, which were given up in July and August, and is using various methods to bring people back to live.
