A Maungdaw Township youth in Gyit Chaung Village, Rakhine State, lost his leg after stepping on a landmine, according to Maungdaw residents.

The young man who lost his leg is Ko Xu Ba, 21, son of U Mae Htun and Daw Tong Paing from Gya Chaung Village, Maungdaw Township.

Yesterday, September 24, at around 11:30 a.m., Ko Xu Ba was walking to Peyun Mountain with his friends Ko Kan Pyae and Ko Aung Naing from the same village when he stepped on a landmine planted by the military junta.

“When I was going to the mountain, I stepped on a landmine planted by the military junta. I lost my right leg when I stepped on the landmine. I have recently gotten married. Now that I have stepped on the landmine, I don’t know how I will feed my family,”

a young man from Maungdaw Township said. Ko Xu Ba’s right leg was injured when he stepped on the landmine planted by the military junta, but his two friends were not injured.

Ko Xu Ba, who lost his right leg, has been taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

Peyun Mountain was previously a military junta base for the 532nd Infantry Battalion of the military junta, and local residents say that Islamic militant groups have been sneaking into the area in recent times.

Currently, Muslim-backed terrorist groups are said to be infiltrating the Mayu Mountains and some areas in Maungdaw region, planting landmines in areas where civilians are moving.

The Arakan Army (AA) is also clearing mines and other unexploded ordnance in Rakhine State, while also conducting mine awareness lectures and distributing mine warning signs and pamphlets.
