The AA has recently recaptured Thaing Chaung Dam, which was previously controlled by the military junta in Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State, a Kyaukphyu military source close to the AA told BBM.
On November 10, the military junta claimed on their propaganda Telegram channels that they had attacked and captured Thaing Chaung village and Thaing Chaung Dam in Kyaukphyu Township.
The AA has been conducting a massive defensive to regain Thaing Chaung village, which they previously controlled, and on November 20, they have captured some checkpoints between Thaing Chaung and Yenan Taung village.
Therefore, the AA has continued to attack Thaing Chaung Dam through the checkpoints they captured, and has recently regained control, according to a Kyaukphyu resident close to the AA.
“I heard that the AA has recaptured the Thaing Chaung Dam. It has been since the past few days. The battle in Thaing Chaung village is fierce. At first, there were casualties. They probably came only to spread propaganda. If they really fought, they would have retreated,” said a Kyaukphyu resident.
The military junta troops had deployed an estimated 70 troops near the Thaing Chaung Dam, and they were reportedly disorganized when the AA attacked, and the junta soldiers entered Thaing Chaung village.
The AA needs to recapture and control areas such as Thaing Chaung Taung and Min Tet Taung to enter Kyaukphyu Township, and if they cannot control these areas, the AA’s offensive into Kyaukphyu township will be difficult, said a Kyaukphyu resident.
“If AA is going to attack Kyaukphyu, they need to capture Thaing Chaung Taung and Min Tet Taung first, so that we can quickly enter Kyaukphyu Township. As we know, Kyaukphyu will not be surrendered easily, so the battle could become even more intense,” he added.
The military junta is continuously bombing the area near Thaing Chaung, where the battle is intense, due to the heavy casualties on the underground, and warships are also firing heavy weapons from the sea.
The military junta is preparing to hold the first part of the election in the three townships of Kyaukphyu, Sittwe, and Munaung that it controls in Rakhine on December 28.
Therefore, the military junta is launching a fierce offensive to seize as many AA-held areas in Kyaukphyu township as possible before the election, according to Rakhine military observers.
In Kyaukphyu township, where the battle is currently intense, more than 3,000 residents from nearly 20 villages have fled to be safe and are facing food shortages, according to Kyaukphyu residents.
In addition to the many Chinese projects in Kyaukphyu, the military junta’s Dhanyawady Naval Headquarters, Battalion 34, Light Infantry Battalion 542, Light Infantry Battalion 543, and the 32nd Police Battalion. It is also a township with a strong naval force, Taung Maw Gyi Naval Base, and Ohn Kyun Naval Branch.
