Locals told BBM that the military council has been conducting continuous airstrikes on Matupi and Mindat townships in southern Chin State, where martial law has been declared.

The military council launched airstrikes on two villages in Mindat Township, Circuit (1) from the Tada-U Air Force starting at around 12:20 pm today, February 7.

“A jet fighter attacked the same place three times, about 5 minutes apart. I think they were cluster bombs because they released the numerous smaller submunitions,” a resident of Mindat told BBM.

Details of casualties and damage have not yet been confirmed, but on February 2, an airstrike in Mindat Township injured a monk and damaged homes and pets.

Similarly, on February 5, Around 12 noon, the military council launched an airstrike on their former strategic base, the 304th Infantry Regiment in Matupi town.

“Two bombs were dropped. There were no people living in the area due to frequent bombings last year. There were no casualties. Some buildings in the base were damaged in bombing,” a resident of Matupi told BBM.

Mindat and Matupi townships are controlled by the Chin Brotherhood Alliance (CB), and the airstrikes have increased since the military council declared martial law in several townships, including Mindat, Matupi, Falam, and Thantlang, on January 29.

Using airstrikes on towns and villages with civilians and areas controlled by the rebel forces is the reaction of military junta to the loss of territory.
