Five inmates killed a prison guard and escaped from a prison in Kyaukpyu, Rakhine State, controlled by the military junta, local residents told BBM.

On the afternoon of February 3, five inmates attacked an elderly prison guard on duty with sharp things such as skewers.

The guard died on the spot from his injuries, and the inmates escaped from the prison.

All five inmates who escaped were from Kyaukpyu prison and were convicted of murder, rape and other serious crimes.

“The escaped prisoners who have committed many crimes and have been sentenced to long prison terms. They have not been arrested yet,” a resident of Kyaukphyu told BBM.

After the incident, police and military junta soldiers blocked all neighborhoods, ports, and roads in and out of Kyaukphyu township to search the prisoners.

However, on February 4, the morning, the prisoners have not been arrested yet.

Although Kyaukphyu Township is currently under the administration of the military junta, crimes such as theft and robbery always occur in the town, and locals are very worried about their safety.
