The battle has been ongoing in Hpakant, a world-famous jade mining area, since January 30 after the election. On February 3, 2 local residents, including a child, were killed and over 10 injured in an artillery shell explosion, according to local residents.

“The artillery shelling killed 2 people and injured 13 others. It was around 11 a.m. on February 3, in Kalichaung village, near the military strategic hill,” said a local man.

There is frequently artillery shelling in there and it is a village west of Tatma Kone in Hpakant.

“One of dead bodies is a 13-year-old child, and we don’t know who the other one is yet,” said another local man.

Although the military junta stopped military operations during sham election, local residents said that after the election, they are moving towards Seikmu, where the revolutionary forces are located, and are firing heavy weapons at areas around Hpakant that are believed to be occupied by revolutionary forces.
