သူရိန် In Hpakant Township, Kachin State, children picked up an unexploded ordnance while playing with it, causing one death and two serious injuries, according to local residents.
Yesterday, February 13, an 8-year-old child found an unexploded ordnance near a garbage dump near Hmaw Maung Stream in Taung Pyo village, Hpakant Township.
“The children picked up an unexploded ordnance near a garbage dump near Hmaw Maung Stream and threw it on a rock while playing, when it exploded,” a Hpakant resident told BBM.
An 8-year-old boy died on the spot, while a girl and a boy were seriously injured and rushed to Myitkyina Hospital.
“One child died on the spot, two were taken to Myitkyina Hospital with serious injuries, and the other one was not seriously injured,” a Hpakant resident told BBM.
On February 12, a deacon was injured after stepping on a landmine planted on the side of a road in Hmaw Wan Ward in Hpakant.
Unexploded ordnance and landmines are currently a major threat to civilians in military conflicts, and parents are urged to educate their children not to handle or play with suspicious weapons and ammunition.
