During the fighting in Hpakant, Kachin State, the Tactical Commander of Kamaing Township, Aung Zaw Lin, is reportedly forcing new recruitment of soldiers to use drugs and alcohol to fight.

Amid the ongoing fighting between the KIA-led revolutionary forces and the military junta in Hpakant Township, some new recruits under the strategy have defected, according to a military source on the ground, BBM reported.

the military source said. In Hpakant Township, the military junta is conducting a large-scale military incursion with troops from the Brigade (33), and many military junta trainees are included in this force.

It is also said that along the route of the incursion in Hpakant Township, some military trainees are joining and defecting the revolutionary forces side.

Most of the soldiers who have defected the Hpakant side are from the Bago region, and there have been about 12 in total since mid-August, the military source added.

“There are a lot of defectors, many from Bago Region. The last batch in August were about a dozen, including the two in August and September. It started about in mid August, and that’s it until today,”

the military source added. The military junta launched an offensive in Hpakant since last May to recapture most of the territory they lost in Hpakant Township, and fierce fighting has been going on since then.
