The military junta and the revolutionary joint forces are still engaged in an intense battle near Lay Kay Kaw, south of Myawaddy town in Karen State, with the military junta suffering the most casualties, according to local revolutionary forces and locals.
On the evening of September 21, the military junta troops advanced with hundreds of troops near Lay Kay Kaw town.
The military junta, which advanced in the morning of September 22, continued to fire artillery shells, and the fighting became more intense on September 23, according to a military source.
“There are many deaths, they are just shooting. They are new military recruits and they are being forced to use drugs, and they are also being shot,”
he said. In the battle south of Myawaddy, the military junta sent a large number of new recruits who had completed their military service training, and the new recruits suffered heavy casualties.
The revolutionary forces said that many of the military junta troops were killed during the battle, but the details are still being investigated.
“It seems that they are trying hard to enter, and their manpower is large, and there are also ground troops in Htee Mei Wahkhee village and Pahikalaw village,”
the military source added. In addition, artillery support is being continuously fired from battalions based outside Myawaddy.
The military junta troops have increased their artillery fire, including drones, during the battle.
After controlling the Kawkareik-Myawaddy Asian Road, including Thingan Nyi Naung, the military junta has advanced south of Myawaddy with the help of the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF), and military tensions between the two sides remain high.
In addition, the junta has retaken some important military positions, including Latt Khat Mountain, and is deploying troops there, according to sources close to the revolutionary forces.
KNU officials have been contacted regarding this situation, but have yet to respond.
Local residents have been fleeing the area since early this month due to the battle and heavy artillery fire by the junta and are in need of assistance.
