Two young men who were detained for military service in Hlaing Township, Yangon Region, were seriously injured and one of them died while trying to escape by jumping from the upper floor of the administrative office.

Two young men who were kidnapped for military service were detained on the upper floor of the office building at the 11th Ward Administrative Office in Hlaing Township.

The two young men tried to escape by jumping from the building to escape from their detention on February 6.

“The young men who were kidnapped by porters were in their 20s, and they jumped from the office to escape. The first one broke his arm, and the other one broke his back and died yesterday,” a local man from Hlaing told BBM.

Although the relevant administration has not yet made any official statement regarding the incident, the arrests and deaths of young people have raised concerns among parents and young people in Hlaing Township.

Young people are increasingly worried about their safety as they are being arrested for military service in various parts of Yangon.

“Since these arrests are happening all over the city, I am worried about my sons and daughters going to and from work. The parents earn their living from their wages. If their children are taken as porters, the parents will have to rely on others for livelihood of their families,” a young mother from Hlaing Township told BBM.

The military council has been carrying out sporadic arrests of young people for military service in townships under its control across the country, including Yangon.
