Armed robbers robbed into A goldsmith’s house in 4th Ward in Lashio, controlled by the military junta with Chinese help, at around 12 noon on February 1, according to local residents.

The house that was robbed is a goldsmith’s house located west of a monastery where a monk was recently assassinated, and it happened just before the monk’s funeral.

“My uncle’s house, which is a goldsmith’s house, was robbed at around 12 noon on February 1. The robbers came with rifles,” said a local resident.

A group of seven robbers came in there by three cars. When the robbers left, the people in the house fired back them. So, the robbers were alarmed , leaving a pistol and some equipment.

The gun that was left behind was confiscated by the Military Security Affairs Corps, and the robbers robbed phones, money, and about 5 visses of gold.

“The house that was robbed is a jewellery store behind the school where the monk was killed. I heard that about 1,000 lakhs kyats were stolen. This store makes gold jewelry, and they also accept jewellery as collateral for loans, and they often made custom jewelry,” said a local woman.

The robbery happened on February 1, around 12 noon, just before the monk’s funeral cortege made, she said.

On January 29, at around 4 am, a local man said that a black Toyota Crown car was stolen from a house in 12th Ward, Lashio town.

Locals said that theft, looting, and armed robbery have become rampant in Lashio since the military junta took control, and that no one has been arrested for committing the crimes.
