In Hsi Hseng, southern Shan State, the military council has begun recruiting women who have turned 18, according to local residents.
The recruitment began in February and is targeting all women aged 18 to 28, including some students in Grade 12.
“The resprentative administrators are now notifying those with names. When these names are listed, they are worried. When they are called, those with names cannot travel far. If they do, they have to inform the administration office,” said a resident.
Some parents have lost sleep over their daughters’ names being listed for military service and are worried about the military service training.
“Some people who are close to the military negotiate with money. Even students are very scared when their names are listed,” he added.
In Hsi Hseng Township, the PNO militia is also recruiting for military training, causing many local youth to flee abroad.
According to the military service law enacted by the military council, every citizen must serve in the military, with men between the ages of 18 and 35 and women between the ages of 18 and 27.
