India-Myanmar border trade route to be closed indefinitely after a Mizoram man was found dead in the area of Myanmar, Mizoram youth organisations Central Young Lai Association and Mara Thyutlia Py said on February 15.
The block of trade route comes as the investigation into the death of Lalramsanga (37), a driver who was transporting goods from
Lawngtlai to Salachua village in Myanmar, is still ongoing.
The Mizoram man, who went missing on February 12, was found dead in the Simtipi River on the evening of February 15.
Therefore, all trade routes connecting Lawngtlai and Siaha districts to Myanmar will be closed indefinitely from 3pm today, February 16.
All trucks and trade operations entering and leaving Myanmar will be completely closed.
“Until we get an answer to deaths, these routes will remain closed and further action will be taken if necessary,” CYLA and MTP jointly warned.
The trade route blocking from Mizoram could pose a major problem for traders in southern Chin State and northern Rakhine State in Myanmar, traders said.
Mizoram, which relies heavily on imports of basic food, fuel and consumer goods, could be prices rising.
“After the military council cut off goods to Rakhine, Rakhine’s goods flow mainly depends on Mizoram. If they block the route now, Rakhine will have a shortage of goods and prices will rise,” a Rakhine trader told BBM.
If the road blockade last for a long time, the border area could face food shortages and it could become more restricted due to the activities of local youth organizations.
Currently, youth organizations are planning to transport the body of the deceased, and it remains whether there will be negotiations between border officials on both sides to conduct.
