U Van Sui UK Lal was shot while returning home on a motorbike after working at the electricity office in the Chin U Zee Ward, in Hakha Township, at around 10:30 am yesterday, February 20.
“They were returning home from the electricity office. Three men were shot by soldiers who were demanding ransom without asking them anything. U Van Sui Uk Lal was hit by a bullet, while the other two were unharmed,” a Hakha resident told BBM.
U Van Sui Uk Lal was shot in the head and died on the spot. He was a worker at the electricity office in Hakha after fleeing the war from Falam township.
The military junta members who were shot were from the 266th Battalion based in Hakha, according to local residents.
“I fled to Hakha because of the fighting in Falam. When I arrived in Hakha, I worked at the electricity office for a long time. It is very sad to be shot and killed without any reason,” a person close to him told BBM.
The shooting of a civilian staff without any reason, even in broad daylight, has caused panic among Hakha residents.
Locals said that the military junta members are stationed in various parts of Hakha for security reasons and often shoot at people walking around.
