The fighting in Naung Hkio Township, northern Shan State, is intensifying day by day, forcing almost all local residents to flee to nearby areas, according to sources on the ground.
Naung Hkio was the first town to be captured by the TNLA and allied forces during the second wave of Operation 1027. The revolutionary forces were able to capture not only the Infantry Battalion (114)and the Infantry Battalion (115) in the town, but also the Missile Battalion (606)nearby.
The military junta began an offensive in February 2025 with troops from the Taung Kham Artillery and Pyin Oo Lwin Military District to retake the Naung Hkio Township and other battalion headquarters that they had lost. Fighting is still intense and local residents are reportedly fleeing the fighting.
In addition, it is reported that the military junta’s columns heading from the Taung Kham Artillery to Naung Hkio arrested and killed some local people who did not flee from Shwe Moke Htaw village on their route.
“When the military line crossed the Shwe Moke Htaw side, some people who stayed at home and did not flee were arrested and killed. Now, people are afraid that they will do the same and have completely fled the war,” a Naung Hkio resident told BBM.
Most of the refugees from Naung Hkio are mainly living in Naung Pein village near Kyaukme town, where they are reportedly facing food and livelihood difficulties.
In addition, the local said that since Naung Hkio town is mainly engaged in agriculture and has a large number of farmers, it is difficult to farm during the rainy season and to avoid such a war.
“This side is mainly engaged in agriculture, and if we can’t plant now, we will face a lot of difficulties in the coming season,” the local said.
Regarding the military junta’s offensive on Naung Hkio, the TNLA said it will defend with all its might and has no plans to surrender to the military junta.
