A Mandalay resident told BBM that an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit Mandalay, Mandalay Region
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced that an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck at 3:28 a.m. on July 16, 2025, 4 miles southeast of Pyay Gyi Dagon Township, Mandalay, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“It came with a loud sound. It was quiet for the past few days, so I slept soundly. It was after 3 am, and we were running out onto the streets. We didn’t even dare to enter their houses after that. I think Mandalay is in trouble,”
a resident of Chan Aye Thar Zan West told BBM. The earthquake was also felt significantly in towns near Mandalay.
“I think another big earthquake has happened. I’m still feeling the effects of the earthquake struck on May 28. I’m starting to think people will be affected again like they were before,”
a Sagaing resident told BBM. On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Sagaing, and records showed that there had been over 200 aftershocks.
