In Sagaing Region, the military council is conducting recruitment in crowded areas and arresting at least 10 young people a day for military service, locals told BBM.
In Kalay township, the military council has been forcibly arresting young people in cars and motorbikes at crowded places such as intersections, shops, and tea shops.
“They don’t stay to arrest them for long in one place, they only stay for 10 minutes, then they move to another place and arrest them, and they are arresting them like that. Yesterday, about 11 young people were arrested, and, more than 30 young people were arrested on 15th February,” a resident of Kalay told BBM.
The military council is targeting young people between the ages of 18 and 35.
The military council soldiers are temporarily detaining these young people at the Kalay Township Office and then transporting them to other townships by Y-8 aircrafts for military training.
“Previously, young people who were arrested for military service were sent to the training school in Kalay Township for military training, but now they are kept at the office for a week or two, and then sent to other townships for military training by aircrafts,” another resident of Kalay Township told BBM.
The arrests of young people by the military council for military service cause the parents worried that their children will be arrested, and young people are also worried to go out, and some are even moving to other places.
Kalay’s Strike Group also issued an emergency warning on February 14 to parents and young people traveling in Kalay Township to be especially careful and avoid checkpoints and patrol vehicles operated by military council forces.
