U Nyunt Thaung (aka) Maung Thar Cho, a 67-year-old writer who was known for his eloquent delivery at literary events, has passed away at Pinlon General Hospital, according to those close to him.
Writer Maung Thar Cho passed away at Pinlon General Hospital at around 8 a.m. on July 10, 2025.
“It’s an indescribable loss. He was a man of many ideas and knowledge. He stood by the people until the end. He was always active and enthusiastic in his literary lectures. That’s such a big loss,”
an audience told BBM. Writer Maung Thar Cho, who is also a professor of Burmese, was sentenced to two years in prison by the military junta under Section 505(a) on February 1, 2021, the same day the military vested power in the military junta.
On November 17, 2022, he was released along with several other prominent former political prisoners.
Saya Maung Thar Cho was released from prison, but was constantly monitored by the military junta until his death.
